Girls’ Wrestling Case Reaches the U.S. Supreme Court

A Washington high-school wrestler and her mother have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in a case involving transgender participation in girls’ sports. They are requesting advance notice when the student is scheduled to wrestle against a biological male who identifies as female, along with the right to withdraw from the match without being penalized.
The case followed a previous match that the student’s attorneys allege resulted in a sexual assault. Washington currently allows students to compete on teams corresponding with their gender identity.
Why is this important? The case involves more than one wrestling match. It raises serious questions about whether female athletes have the right to know whom they will be competing against and whether they can decline a match when they believe their safety, privacy, or fairness may be compromised.
The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether it will grant the requested emergency protection. Washington’s current policy therefore remains in effect while the case continues. I will keep you posted as to future happenings.
